Two patients with teeth that look similar in a mirror can need treatments that differ in length by a year and in cost by a wide margin, because the difference lives in the bite, the roots, and the jaw relationship — none of which are visible in a selfie.
Any clinic that gives you a firm price without records is either quoting a package that may not fit your case, or planning to revise the number later. Both are worse for you than waiting for a proper assessment.
What actually drives the price
**Case complexity.** Mild crowding corrected in eight months costs less than a case involving extractions, space closure, and bite correction over two and a half years. Complexity is the single biggest factor.
**Appliance type.** Metal braces have the lowest material cost. Ceramic (tooth-coloured) brackets cost more. Clear aligners typically cost the most, because every tray in the series is custom-manufactured in a laboratory and the number of trays scales with the case.
**Treatment length.** Longer treatment means more appointments, more wires, more chair time, and more of the orthodontist's ongoing supervision. Time is a real cost, not a rounding error.
**Retainers and follow-up.** Retention is part of treatment, not an optional extra. Ask whether the quoted price includes your retainers and the follow-up visits after debonding, because that changes the true total meaningfully.
What a consultation includes
A proper orthodontic consultation involves a clinical examination, the radiographs and records needed to see the roots and jaw relationship, a diagnosis, and a discussion of the treatment options that are clinically appropriate for you. At the end of it you should leave with a written plan and a number that will not change unless your case changes.
